A Pair of Pockets
Early 18th c

Clearly amateur made from Bizarre style embroidery of the early 18th century, perhaps made at the time or slightly later. They fabric is possibly left over from a bedcover or petticoat.  Yellow was a fashionable colour in the early 18th century. The silk used is probably Indian muga silk.

Description

each embroidered in yellow silks with a bizarre design of stylised poppy head, flowers, leaves and C scrolls as well as angular shapes, the stitches in tiniest back stitch, herringbone, and chainstitch, all on a slightly glazed unbleached linen ground, pocket openings centre, linen tape strings, the backing of ribbed cotton, 14 1/2  x 10 in; 18 x 25 cm widest.

Condition

Very good. The fronts have a little grubbiness to outer edge, but when I showed a textile conservator she said they could be wet washed but not really necessary. The back have overall light markings.

Charmingly homemade. You should be able to clearly see that the left hand pocket is slightly mishapen on the right hand side.
