Altar Cloth Hanging
Late 19th c.

of triangular shape, very finely embroidered with thick twisted silks, silk cord and thick floss silks and gold couching, depicting a dramatic pheonix amongst leaves and fruits, her tail feathers with peacock feathers in relief, her body with feathers caught down, all in shades of rust, mid green, ochre, lime green, pale blue and ivory silks on gold ground, 21 x 31 in .w (including cotton top).

Comments

Originally this would have hung down over the front of an altar which would first be covered with a brocade cloth. Stunning piece. This would look good framed up with the cotton top hidden. We can do this work ready for framing. The gold is spun round a silk core and couched (caught down) with small silk threads.

Condition

Slight pale brown mark to pale blue silks on top left hand side. Otherwise excellent condition.
