Bandhani wedding
Mid 19th c
shawl, Indian, made in Kutch the indigo silk satin ground tie dyed with pink minute circles, with S E Punjab>gotawork gold stars applied later, the shawl with a central moon and two half moons to each side, 6ft 6 in x 5 ft in; 2.00x 1.54 m
Comments
Extremely fine bandhana work/ Unusual to have stars applied. Twine is bound tightly round the silk, the areas covered by the twine resisting penetration. In the 18th century bandhani was in such demand that it entered the English language as the word for a spotted kerchief. Gillow, John dnd Sentance, Bryan World Textiles p123. I have also been told that this was made in Madhuri for the Muslim market.
Condition
The silk ground is excellent. Some of the gota stars are missing and others need a few stitches.
