This piece of Bird would make a lovely present for a Morris enthusiast. Obviously there are no birds on our fragment, but it is still very pleasing with its beautiful flower and leaves and colours.
Bird fabric can be seen in Kelmscott Manor and as wall hangings in the dining room at Standen. Morris originally designed it for the drawing room at Kelmscott House, Hammersmith.
Woven woolen double cloth designed by William Morris in 1878, handloom Jacquard woven at Merton Abbey, in shaded indigo and natural with flowers bending on stems.
7 1/2 x 4 in/ 19 x 10 cm actual fabric Acid free mount in taupe shade, hand coloured to inner edge in blue, painted green frame, plastic instead of glass. 10 x 8 in/26 x 20 cm.
Very good.
