Baroque and Rococo Silks by Peter Thornton. In the chapter on Bizarre Silks, Thornton explains that the arrangement of the motifs adheres to the seventeenth century formula with alternating leaning rows of motifs. Dresses at this period were long and slim with a train and showed off a longer repeat pattern to advantage. Men's waistcoats and banyans were also long at this stage and made from similar brocade. Oriental goods had been arriving in Europe during the last third of the seventeenth century, so by 1700 there was plenty of inspiration for silk weavers. Typical colouring for the period.
