Chine silk shawl
c 1850

Lovely rustly heavish silk. I think this is printed to look like a chine weave rather than woven. The e at end of chine should have an acute accent, because this is a French word, but I don't know how to get my computer to make one! Chine A patterned fabric with a characteristic blurred appearance achieved by winding the warp threads on a frame and then printing with a design. The printed warp threads are transferred to the loom and weft threads woven in, resulting in a blurring ofthe warp pattern. Hart, Avril and North, Susan Historical Fashion in Detail. The 17th and 18th Centuries Glossary

Description

of neutral silk tafetta, printed with exotic Oriental inspired flowers in shades of soft red, green, blue and gold, 6 ft 5 in. sq, pink and cream mixed fringe.

Condition

The odd mark (photos available). Where the weft threads have very very slightly parted on the gold, the effect is brighter gold which is very pretty.
