Chinese Export Waistcoat
1850's

Unusual. The silk damask woven with Chinese symbols was woven in China but not especially  for the European market.  Chinese robes might use a similar design. Perhaps someone was sent a length from China and had it made up here as a waistcoat.

Description

cream silk damask woven with Chinese Buddhist symbols, pointed double revers, the lower with buttonholes, six silk covered buttons, two slit pockets, white cotton back steel two prong buckle, under arm 36 in; 92 cm; nape of neck to hem 18 in; 46cm.

Condition

Excellent apart from one small light yellow stain to the right hand top rever.
