Eastern Inspired
c 1720

woman holding a flower and in spriped silk robes in shades of pink, blue, green and yellow worked in tent stitch, with silver wrapped silk couching for details, all on a pale blue silk taffetta ground, the actual figure 5 x 2 1/2 in; 13 x 6 cm

Comments

Charmingly naive figure. There is an eastern flavour to these embroideries, a European's idea of the exotic East.

Baumgarten, Linda What Clothes Reveal The Language of Clothing in Colonial and Federal America p 186 for similar embroidery on the green silk apron.

Condition

The embroidery is very good. There are some marks to the left hand edge of the silk, but these would be covered in framing. There are also some feint markings to the right of the figure. I think if this was framed and possibly had a mount these imperfections would not show.
