Embroidered Sleeve Ruffles
1735

Beautiful work. Cuffs in the boot cuff style for a 1730's gown, probably destined for a court mantua. Some of the silver thread work is almost three dimensional.  I love the contrast of the dense embroidery and silverwork to the central flowers and the more sketchy drawing and embroidery to the outer sections. Or is it unfinished. Not sure because the fold lines suggest it has been used.

Description

the pale cream finely ribbed silk tafetta embroidered with a variety of flowers including tulips, peonies and pinks (carnations) as well as leaves and stems, using shades of pink, blue, green, coral silks with silver wrapped thread intricate petals, 6 in going down to 5 inx 17 in/15 cm going down to 13.5 cm x 43 cm long

Condition

Very good.  The silk is rather creased and there are some fold lines .  There is a little discolouration to the centre of one cuff and very slight light brownish markings to very edge.

Comments

Costume in Detail, Bradfield, Nancy  - Green and pink silk striped floral brocade with similar cuffs, pages 3 + 4 or similar to the shape of the silver lace cuffs on p. 67 but not so nipped in in shape to be a wing.
