Exotic Shawl
1850's

A most unusual weave to this shawl and in rich glorious colours. One of the nicest I have bought. I do not know where this shawl was manufactured and is very untypical of the usual shawls of Paisley design. A collector's piece. Although I have a large pin board to hang shawls, it is never long enough for these very large Jacquard woven examples. I therefore photograph in two halves.

Description

the deep end borders woven on a Jacquard loom with nine elegant upright pines within cusped arches, between guard stripes of oval medallions with slanting short pines above, the borders with small upright pines, all filled with Eastern flowerheads in crimson, pink, pale yellow, mid blue and green on a black twill weave ground, fringe to two ends, 11ft 2 in x 5ft 3 in; 3.4 x 1.6 m

Condition

One end has a hole 3 x 3 cm.  A small nick out of one side 1/4 in; There are a few feint white marks and several holes to the centre.
