French Ciselé Voided Velvet
1770's

Gowns at this period were shorter, often polonaise style (with skirt pulled up by tapes, into large puffs) over a quilted petticoat, revealing ankles and shoes!  The shoes are very unusual being made with voided velvet, which may been have a remnant left over from the making of a gentleman's coat or waistcoat. It is not the type of fabric used for women's dresses. The cross over latches would have been secured with decorative buckles. Ciselé velvets have the cut pile higher than the uncut.

Description

The velvet of taupe fine rib woven with blue centred flowers with black leaves, fruits and leaves in similar colours, edged with a grosgrain pale blue silk, lined in natural linen, the front with cross over latches, high tongue, slighty pointed toes, 2 in/5 cm high shaped Louis heel, leather soldes, turnshoe construction.

From toe to back of heel 8 in/20 cm
