Girl's Paper Hat
c 1860-65

probably made at home from a pattern in a woman's magazine.

Description

small oval shaped stamped to resemble straw, flat crown, straight brim shaped to a curve at the front and back, mid blue satin ribbons, looped paper trim, pleated frill to base, feathers to back, small white feathers which resemble fern leaves and a few mid blue feathers, lined in organza 6 1/4 in; 16 cm front to back.

Condition

The paper is bent in places but not damaged. The ribbons have some fading, the feathers are a little raggy. Few light brown markings to left hand side of the hat, as you look at it. I think if it was given a little attention this would be quite charming.

Comments

Many years ago I had a hat made from plaited newspaper of the same date.
