Comments

These are quite fantastic. If the two narrow side pieces from both curtains were removed they would look really good. There is some vertical fading where the curtains have been exposed to the sun, but really not at all bad. I think if these were cleaned and re lined and interlined they would look splendid. Of course a museum may want to conserve and keep them as they are. I can quote to clean and conserve if wished. The red edging braid on the curtains is carpet edging, but absolutely original. The fabric width is 36 in or 92 cm. See: ARTICLES

Condition

Each curtain has six widths of fabric plus 15 inch or 40 cm to one side and 26 in or 66 cm to the other . So the pair have more than 46 m of fabric. Curtain 1: There is a 27 in or 69 cm long vertical tear to the right hand side (leading edge). The 15 in or 38 cm width could be removed. There is a big horizontal 13 in or 33 cm tear to the left hand side half way down the curtains and a 32 in or 80 cm vertical tear. This width could also be removed. There is a little wear to the very bottom of the curtain. Curtain 2: the leading edge has a 4 ft or 1.2 m vertical tear and the rest of the area is very faded. The whole of the 15 in width could be removed. The right hand side 26 in or 66 cm could also be removed because it is also in very faded condition. These have both had the original hopsack lining cut away, although some is left with the hooks embedded, at the top. This has revealed a cotton lining which presumably is later. Pelmet: edged with red cotton tape, original but dfferent from heavier tape of curtains. An area of water marks20 in wide x 4 in deep. Another water mark 15 in x 4 in and another small area. Some fading in parts to the pelmet. Lining torn in parts.
