Honeysuckle Firescreen
c 1880

A beautiful embroidery in a very elegant frame. William Morris designed Honeysuckle in 1876. A very complex pattern it was used as a block print onto silk, linen, cotton, challis and velveteen.

The embroidery designs, such as this one, were sold at the Royal School of Needlework in 1876 and marketed as kits, sold with the silks and with the pattern printed onto the linen.

Description

The embroidered panel Honeysuckle, designed by William Morris, with a symmetrical design of shaded pink honeysuckle on bending tendrils, with shaded oval green leaves, all on a cream silk ground, worked on linen, 22 in/56 cm square.

The light mahogany frame with diagonal open fretwork below the embroidery. 3 ft 7 in x 2 ft/ 1.10 x 61 cm wide

Condition

The embroidery is in very good condition.  The frame has the glass and the two finials from the top of the frame missing.  If you did not realise they should be there you would not know! I know a good furniture restorer who could make these for you.
