Golden Jubilee Apron
1887
Great fun. I have not seen one like this before. Alexandra MacCulloch, Keeper of Art, Clothing & Textiles at Buckinghamshire County Museum, UK has kindly passed on some information about a similar apron they have in their collection (AYBCM 1977.393). She tells me that they have a child's apron, 1887 made from material specially printed to celebrate the Queen's jubilee. The school children of the village of White Waltham on the Berkshire/Buckinghamshire border made up aprons to wear at the celebrations. The material cost 6 pence a yard. The cotton is printed with random crowns in pink, red and green on a white ground and with stripes of similar colours incorporating dates of every year of the Queen's reign along the edges. The bib is vertically gathered, with a band of the dated stripe across the top, a button at each corner. A loop passes behind the neck. The skirt is pleated into the waistband and the waist ties, made from the dated stripe, continue along the waist.
