Man's wool coat
1770's

Marvellous colour with embroidered buttons. The wool was of such quality that the edges are just cut fabric. The lining is highly glazed worsted or shaloon. I did look through the pattern books at Norwich Shire Hall Museum and although I found an identical lining fabric, could not find an exact match for the wool.

Description

of deep pink wool, small standing collar, the front curved with ten embroidered buttons and fake embroidered buttonholes , deep pockets with pointed flaps, revealing linen interiors, the sleeves with short cuffs each with two buttons, the back with seaming from centre of sleeve backs to hem, the low waist caught with two buttons and deep pleating with open vent, shaloon deep pink lining, the sleeves lined with linen.

Condition

Either the coat was altered for another man or the wearer got fatter! The sleeves were reshaped and narrowed to modernise the original wider cuff. There is a half moon insertion under the arms, If you look at one cuff you can see a lighter part of a button shape next to the seam. The cuffs have been removed and then added to the edge of the cuff to lengthen the sleeve. Some of the buttons have skeins of silk pulled away so could do with a little conservation. The back right hand skirt has a slight dark stain 16 1/2 in or 42 cm long; mainly 2 in or 5 cm high but rising to a point of 4 in; 12 cm in one place. ask for photos.
