sleeveband, with four of the Taoist attributes, include the fan, bamboo and rods, crutch and gourd and the castanets surrounded an archaic vessels filled with a peony, small flowers and swastika (good luck symbols) in the infill, all in pretty shades of peach, coral, blue, yellow, green and grey on a pale blue silk gauze ground, gold wrapped silk highlights, 19 1/2 x 3 1/2in; 50 x 9 cm

Comments

The fan belonged to Zhong Li Quan, chief of the immortals. The bamboo tube and rods belonged to Zhang Guo Lao, a recluse with supernatural powers; the crutch and gourd, Li Tie Guai, patron saint of the sick and the castanest , Cao Guo Jiu, patron saint of actors. The other sleeveband would have depicted the attributes of the other four immortals. Very attractive colouring and subject matter.

Condition

The embroidered panel is very good, surround grubby, as is so often the case. Once a mount was put round the embroidery this would not of course show.
