Rare Bergere
c 1780

This Dutch bergere straw hat would have been worn by a rich merchants wife in Middelburg, Zeeland in the 18th century. The rich farmers wives were to adopt this hat as part of their Sunday going to town best dress. This always confuses the collectors of traditional/regional dress in Holland, that items they consider unique to their area were in fact originally items of fashion of the towns folk. The straw hat would have come from Italy and the silk brocade from France, and then assembled in Holland.

Description

the fine plaited leghorn straw lined with mid-green silk brocade woven with sprays of flowers in fushia, ivory, soft brown and a gold silk, imitating gold thread, with sea green ribbons in the background, the ribbons also woven brocade with small flowers in peach, addiitonal very narrow striped ribbons, 16 1/2 in; 42 cm diameter.

Condition

You will see just below the crown the straw has come away slightly from the rest of the hat, 5 in or 13 cm. It is not serious and when hat is flat does not show.  The ribbons are frayed on the ends and there is a dark stain near the centre of the back bow. You will be able to see this in the photos.
