Rare Damask Pocket
18th c

Not only is it very unusual to find a pocket made of damask, but this example is also lined in chamois which is divided into four inner sections. It is normally men's pockets which are lined with chamois, probably because they would have had heavier use, with the weight of coins etc.  I have not seen a pocket before which has a sloping top. This appears to have been sewn into a dress rather than on a tape tied round the waist. The quality of the materials used indicates that this was made for a wealthy lady. Bought in America.

Description

of palest shell pink silk damask woven with a very large design of flowers, the opening and edges bound with a 1.5 cm woven braid, the back of Imperial yellow silk taffeta, the chamois lining with beautifully shaped double pocket to back and front, 11 x 17 in or 28 x 43 cm drop.

Condition

The edging braid has clearly faded very evenly because inside it is bright pink.  There are a couple of darns to the lower left hand side. A little wear to the lower left hand opening. The back has some quite dark staining.
