Rare Linen Under Drawers
Third quarter 18th c

These are in remarkable condition for such a rare garment. Most under garments would have been stained or worn out and cut up for polishing cloths. Not all men wore drawers, tucking their long shirts down into their breeches. By the last quarter of the 18th century underwear began to be made and worn.  Beautiful seaming and stitching.

Description

Finely woven linen with two covered buttons on the wide waistband, two smaller buttons on the covered placket, the back with two hand worked eyelet holes with a twill weave linen tie, gusset in bottom area, the cuffs with linen ties, waist 32 in; 80 cm; front to hem 2 ft; 62 cm. Top leg width 23 in; 60 cm.

Condition

The breeches have a lovely sheen to the linen, which is as if they have not been washed. They need a good wash because they are a little grubby.  As you look at the front there is a small hole 1/4 in; 5 cm round. The lower left leg has a few black ink markings.  The back right leg also has a few black ink marks.  There is a light brown spot to the bottom area. Ask for photos.
