Rare Dress Coat
1840s

I felt the curved front was unusual. Love the M notched lapels. The last button was of course not meant to be fastened. Beautifully and finely hand stitched. The rather full breast measurement is typical of the fashionable pigeon fronted look of the 1840's. From the proportions we can see the wearer was shortish and full breasted.

Description

of black fine wool broadcloth with raw cut edges, the owner's name in the top of the sleeve lining (difficult to read), the whole very finely handsewn, gently curving double breasted front with eight flat covered buttons, vertical front seam and horizontal waist seam, deep collar, wide lapels with buttonhole on left, M shaped notched lapels, dropped shoulder very long gently gathered sleeves with deep cuffs, the back with single flap, two covered buttons, concealed pockets either side, lined in brown twill weave cotton, an inside slit pocket to left hand side breast, lined with a wool/silk mix to upper half, very long sleeves with deep cuffs lined with cream twill cotton, the owner's name hand stitched in top left sleeve,  chest 42 in; waist 35 in. underarm sleeve length 23 in; nape to hem back

Condition

Almost pristine. You will see the red wool interlining peeping out from the coat's left hand lapel. This needs a few stitches. No damage just come undone. The button for the back I have. One small moth hole to coat's top back right hand sleeve Two more minute holes to front of same sleeve, one at top, one bottom.  The lapel buttonhole has very slight marking. Coat's left lapel has extremely slight wear. I can only see this by looking at the coat in sunlight. Another small area to lower front hem. Inside on one side at the front there are signs of moth.
