Ribbon & Chenille
c 1840

a foldover shawl, probably Norwich, two deep borders printed in black ink with stylised fruit motifs and serrated leaves which are outlined in embroidered silks using a tambour needle, with additional embroidered shaded ribbon work in pinks and blues and chenille silk flower centres in pink and green chenille calyx, all in a meander design, on a light beige wool and silk ground, the woven sewn on border in diagonal stripes of sage green and ivory with small flowers, between guard stripes, two sides with border sewn back to front, in order to form the turnover, 51 in. sq.

Comments

Rare. I have never seen a shawl like this before with the the block print outlined and then embellished with ribbon and chenille thread. The border certainly looks like Norwich.
