Sarah Chorley's Pocket Book
1773

Charmingly naive design, clearly worked by a young girl.  So nice to have the maker's name and date embroidered inside.

Description

Dated 1773, the curved flap over rectangle embroidered in thick wools on a canvas ground, with a spray of full blown roses and buds in red, pink with yellow centres, on bronze and green leafy stems, the ground natural, edged with pale blue silk, opening to reveal pale blue silk lining, a dividing compartment with another piece of embroidered woolwork with the Sarah Chorley and 1773, in coffee coloured wool on a natural ground, the border with roses in terracotta and green wool and ivory silks, the sides and back of the divinding compartment in 18th century silks, pale blue silk and a natural linen thread used for the hand sewing, 3 1/4 x 5 1/2 in/8 x 14 cm.

Condition

As you should be able to see from the photos the pale blue silk has worn away to the curved flap. There are two minute areas where the canvas ground can been seen and the wool has worn away. The inside silk is damaged and split. The piece of embroidery inside is fine.
