Spitalfields Blue Silk Stole
c 1810-15

Another delicious shawl. The centre changeable silk colouring was achieved using a royal blue warp thread with a brown weft thread.

Description

The twill weave shot silk blue and brown centre with deep end borders with multi flower blooms in yellow, soft terracotta, green, silver on a blue ground, below a slanting stylised leaf border, above two rows of flowerheads, all outlined with striped shaded green and yellow lines, simialr side borders, 9 ft x 32 1/2 in/2.7m x 82 cm

Condition

Fantastic. Hardly noticeable. Only one little area where the threads have pulled to the centre. Ask for photo.

Comments

Similar stoles can be found in most dress museum collections, including Victoria & Albert Museum, Whitworth, Manchester and Bath Costume Museum. In America the DAR museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Colonial Williamsburg has some, as well as numerous other museums.
