Straw Bonnet
c 1840

with wide bands of curving twisted straw interspersed by loosely interwoven crin or horsehair applied here and there with straw work leaves, the two side panels and the edge with densely plaited straw, the shape projecting at the back and with rounded lappets at the sides.

Comments

A rare and charming example. It is very difficult to find early 19th century bonnets or hats.

Condition

Needs a steam to re shape. It has lost some of its straw leaves to one side and there are a few small breaks to the crin in the same panel. The other side (the left as you look at the bonnet) appears to be fine. The centre panel has some breaks, the worst at the front.
