I bought this because I felt it could probably be made into an 18th century hat. The brim is a little deeper than early hats but with decoration could probably be disguised.
the straw plaited crown with open work flat straw huge brim, the very edge with densely plaited three dimensional straw, green cotton tape ribbon, 19 in; 48 cm across; the crown 6 1/2 in; 16 cm across; 1 1/4 in; 3.5 cm high.
The outer brim has some breaks to the straw. See photo.
My thanks to Veronica Main, Significent Collections Manager of Wardown Park Museum, Luton tells me she thinks the hat is made from plant fibre from Indonesia area or the Carribean.
