buzi for a fifth civil ranking official's wife, of a silver pheasant, front opening, all embroidered in fine counted stitch with the bird and the sun applique, the ground with symbols of the Eight Immortals, Buddhist and Eight Treasures, the border with alternating bats andxi or happiness symbols the back lined with pale blue silk, 8 in. sq; 20 cm sq.

Unusual to find such a small badge. When worn the bird faces towards the left hand shoulder. Her husband or son would be placed on her left hand side at official functions, so as the bird is paying homage to the emperor, the woman is defering to her husband/son. Why is this badge so small? Could it be for a Han woman rather than a Manchu?
