Young Boy's Trousers
1820-30

Rare. These belonged to John Sale who lived in Ashwell, Hertfordshire, England. The front two and back three buttonholes would have been attached to a under jacket shirt.

Description

of thick cream jean cotton, the waistband front with a four buttonholes and two linen covered buttons and thee butonholes to the upward shaped back, a slanting right hand side pocket, a lower central front opening slit, side opening slits reinforced back and front, the hems with deep tucks, waist 24 in or 61 cm; length front 26 in or 67 cm; inside leg 16 1/2 in/42 cm.

Condition

Good and strong. The trousers originally had two tucks, one high up, the other having been let down. The stitching holes can be seen. The pocket stitching at the top has come undone. There is a very small hole where it has come away. A little grubby on the side folds. The left hand lower leg has some feint reddish markings which you should be able to see from the photos. The back right hand leg has similar reddish markings. There are a couple of rust marks to the hem of the left hand leg and a few spots near the waistband. A conservator could give these a good wash and I think they would come up rather well.
