Young Girl's Bustle
1880's

This is a Dutch bustle. I bought it in Amsterdam. Unusual to find one for a young girl.

Cataloguing

of white cotton, small waistband with ties above the top section with three rows of triple stiffeners, all plastic coated, the lower section with three deep pleats, the hem with a broderie anglais edge, the underside with space for six stiffeners, but only two now in place, an inner flap to both sides with holes for tapes, to pull the bustle round the body. 27 1/2 inch or 70 cm long.

Condition

As I have mentioned the top stiffeners are all plastic coated and the two at the bottom are coated steel. Four are missing from the lower section. The tapes have been replaced. There are a couple of slight light brown marks to the front. The bustle would benefit from washing. There is a slight hole to the left hand side second set of stiffeners. The underside has some small mid brown stains to the ends of two sets of siffeners. One of the inner flaps has a darn above the bottom buttonhole and some of the others are poor stitching.
