It is very unusual to find harlequin bordered European shawls. A very attractive shawl. This would have been woven on a handloom, the threads on the reverse being closely cropped. Hooked vines are reminiscent of Kashmir shawls, a motif occasionally copied on European shawls.
of scarlet wool and silk, the ends woven with deep borders of eight pines, filled with foliage and hooked vines within a pistachio, indigo, saffron,, and red border. between guard stripes of Indian inspired flowerheads, topped with mehrab style decoration, the side borders similar, two ends with pink silk warp threads fringing, 9 ft 3 x 4 ft 7 in; 2.82 x 1.4 m
The ends and woven areas are very good. The scarlet centre has some feint blackish markings here and there.
