Cut Velvet Shoes
1730s

A fine pair of early shoes in a rarely seen cut velvet. These would have been worn with steel or diamonté buckles. The kid leather linings would have made the shoes very comfortable.

Cataloguing

Brown cut and uncut velvet pile edged in brown silk ribbon, cross over latchets, slightly raised pointed toes, high shaped heels, white leather rand, leather soles, lined with white kid and linen , the latchets backing of dress silk brocaded with simple brown stripe, pale blue stripe and self coloured leaf design.

Heels 2 1/2 in; 6 cm

Sole 8 3/4 in; 22 cm

Condition

Very good.  As always the toes are worn, which you should be able to see in the photos. The ribbon from the very upper backs of the shoes was missing so we have used the closest silk ribbon we could find and conserved this area. The soles show the shoes were well worn.
