Crin & Straw Bonnet
c.1840
Delightful and eye catching. The yellow ribbon is rather more bright and acidic than the photos. A beautiful shade. For similar see: Hats and Bonnets from Snowshill byAlthea Mackenzie (The National Trust 2004) p 36. Snowshill is one of the world?s leading collections of costume and accessories of the 18th and 19thc. , currently housed at Berrington Hall in Herefordshire with no public access! There is another book in the series Shoes and Slippers and two more in the pipeline. Must haves in my opinion. ?10 each. The ISBN number is 0-7078-0384S.
Cataloguing
worked with six layers of woven crin (horsehair), straw and a black thread, edged with straw work fan shapes and outlined in black chenille, all alternating with bands of crin, the back similarly worked with a central gathered crin crown, trimmed with woven shaded yellow ribbons with a central black and white horizontal stripe, picot edging formed in bows at each side of the bonnet, the white silk net bavolet trimmed with a double row of straw work continuous loops and bordered with ribbon, ribbon ties, lined with finest ivory silk, wire frame, width across front 8 /4 in; back to front 9 in.
Condition
In remarkable condition The very edge of the brim has had some extra stitches to keep in in place. The ribbons are slightly grubby here and there, but not bad at all. Where the chin ribbons are attached to the inside of the hat they have some green marks (ball point pen?) and have been badly sewn back. I will take this to my sewer in the next few weeks to have these sewn more sympathetically. The inside crown silk lining is quite damaged and frail but it is still there.
