American Gown
1892
Absolutely stunning. Could this be a Worth copy?
This was made up from unused Chinese robe fabric. It is clear from the positioning of the roundels on the silk that it was yardage destined for a man's informal robe. Perhaps the owner lived in China at this time, or was given the silk as a present by someone who had visited. The damask roundels are woven with pairs of dragons chasing flaming pearls, representing the emperor chasing the elixir of life. The fabric has been used quite carefully placing a roundel over each bosom and one centre front.
