Leek Embroidery
Late 19th c
Beautiful soft shades and very good embroidery. Most likely this would have been bought in kit form and embroidered by a gifted amateur. What is interesting is that the couched thread has been taken through the backing silk at the ends, so that the reverse shows ends of silks bound with gold.
Cataloguing
the natural tussore silk ground embroidered with four flowerheads within leafy tendrils, two coral, soft reds, yellow and two blue, pink, ochre and cream thick floss silks, the leafy tendrils in ochre, yellow with further small flowers and green shaded leaves, outlining in double rows of gold wrapped silk, 20 x 18 in; 50 x 46 cm.
Condition
As you will see where the piece has been framed and the border covered there is a slightly darkening of the natural silk ground. The silks have slightly faded. Once framed and with a mount this will not show.
