Map Sampler
1798

An atttractive and interesting example. Map samplers are always rather charming and have that naive quality which many of us love in early English textiles.

Chenille silk is always a bonus in embroidery and was popular during the late 18th century.

Cataloguing

A map of England and Wales, byA Lucas embroidered in coloured silks with names of cities, a compass to lower left, within an oval embroidered in chenille silks with a variety of flowers including violas, morning glory and pinks, now sewn by hand to calico, stretched over acid free board, ready for framing, 25 x 22 in d; 64 x 56 cm

Condition

Very good. There has been a few little breaks on embroidered lines, a few moth holes, but once framed up and hung, these would hardly show. Photos available. The colours are good and unfaded. There are a few very feint marks here and there but these would not show once the piece was behind glass and hanging. There are also a couple of small holes under Sea below the Isle of Man , top left at 10.00pm. There is also a little blue colour run in a couple of places. None of this detracts visually from the sampler.
