Chine Silk Taffeta
c 1840
A beauty. There is that lovely rustling sound when the shawl moves, so the wearer would have brought attention to herself.
Cataloguing
the ground with panels of blue fading to paler shade, the darker panels with stripes, the whole woven with pale brown foliage and flowers, sprays of peonies in soft shades of red and blue alternating with blue flower sprays, 5ft 5 in; 1.65 m sq knotted silk fringing

There are quite a few pale pale brown markings to the centre area and one side. Somehow these do not detract from its beauty. Collector's piece if you don't mind some imperfections.
