Embroidered Pelisse
c 1795-6

This coat belonged to Josephine Jeffery, a theatrical costumier . She tells me it was the inspiration for "Bequest to the Nation and other 1804 style costumes The shape is almost Turkish and the charming naive embroidery Eastern inspired.


Cataloguing

of ivory silk taffeta, with narrow sleeves set well into the back of the coat, fine pleating below the back bodice panel, the edges and back panel embroidered in twisted silks with a vertical border of winged naked amorini wearing elaborate headdress, holding a beautiful bows and with ribbons draped over them, together with banana and palm trees, a type of fir and two types of fruit trees one with a bird with a speech bubble singing a song SI MOO ? other birds alighting on vegetation, a deer and insects all on a earth meander with small buildings, in shades of green, brown and pink, the seams embroidered, the bodice lined with cotton, shulder to hem at back 63 in or 160 cm.


Condition

Very good. There is a 1 in or 3 cm horizontal tear near the bust which I have had a conservator beautifully mend. Almost impossible to see. It is quite crumpled and needs a good steam.
