Exotic Embroidery

This type of work was very popular for bedcovers of this period, for waistcoats and petticoats. Yellow tussore silks were used and imported from India. The embroidery was done by sewing through the linenand a cotton backing. For similar piece Textiles at Temple Newsam ref 377, p88.

English, a panel from a bedcover, the fine linen ground embroidered in yellow silks with a shell motif and large and exotic curling leafy tendrils, some leaves with a variety of fillings,


Condition

Very good. A small hole above large motif top right. Hardly notices. The lower right hand corner is clearly from a different bedcover.
