Neo Classical
c 1800

Stunning design. See: Schoeser, Mary & Dejardin, Kathleen French Textiles 1760 - the Present p As you will see the composition of the print is the same as these pieces. Jean Jacque Lagenee (1739-1821) also known as Lagrennee Le Jeune as his older brother was a well known painter. The brothers visited Russia and studied in Rome. Jean-Jacques concentrated in history paintings and engraving. He was the co-artistic director at Sevres Porcelain. His interest in classical antiquity can be seen in one of the sets of china the factory produced in 1788 for Marie Antoinette to use in the Neo Classical Dairy at the royal hunting estate of Rambouillet. I came across a textile design of his in the Art Institute of Chicago. The swans in the design are the symbol of Empress Josephine
