Norwich Wool Damask
c 1740
Very rare, wool damask being hard to find, but knowing it was woven in Norwich makes this piece very special. .
Cataloguing
wool woven with a damask pattern of large grapes and vine leaves and other leaves and flowers, 31 in or 79 cm pattern repeat; 43 x 12 in or 1.10 x 30 cm one selvedge
Condition
You will probably be able to see from the photos that there are two holes to the top of the panel, below the join and a few more areas of slight wear to the centre and some more obvious holes to the bottom. However, the pattern can clearly be seen.
Comments
This was probably a skirt panel . The damask fabric was known as spigeldamast or mirror damask and the shine (calendaring) was achieved by putting the completed fabric through heated cylinders. Calendering makes the fabric dirt resistant and therefore stronger.
