RARE Pair of Crewel Wool Columns
Late 17th c/early 18th

The columns are extremely rare, similar can be seen in: Nevinson, John L Catalogue of English Domestic Embroidery plate LIII , p 71 similar to Hatton Garden hanging. These are  very early pieces of crewel woolwork. RARE.

Cataloguing

each with a  diagonally striped column in graduated shades of red, blue and beige, with huge curling and coiling acanthus leaves with a variety of minute fillings, each standing on plinths, each 4 x 6ft 5 in or 1.2 x 1.97 m drop

Condition

These were badly re applied in the late 19th century probably by The Royal School of Needlework. We have bought some diagonal twill weave linen, similar to the original, had it hand dyed and re applied the columns by hand resulting in a very fine and rare pair of hangings.
