Chinese Export
c 1910

Very unusual. Love the Ming style upturned toes. The Chinese embroidery was made specially for a pair of shoes and made up by the Bond Street makers, probably for a grand fancy dress party.

Cataloguing

ladies shoes, the inside leather insole with gold stamped label Hook Knowles & Co. Makers to The Royal Family, 66 New Bond Street, London the red satin uppers embroidered with cranes and spotted deer amongst trees and flowers, the backs with two seams, with upturned toes and central front seam, gold braid to the front, the tops bound with red grosgrain ribbon, lined with ivory kid, leather soles

Condition

Overall very good. The fine grosgrain ribbon is a little worn on both shoes, which you should be able to see from the photos. The toes are a little bent but with a little stuffing would be fine. The soles have signs of a little wear. The heels are slightly stronger red and appear to be the same satin, so perhaps the uppers have faded very slightly, and one shoe slightly more than the other.
