Spitalfields
1760's

Lovely colours and design. During the 1840's there was a fashion for altering 18th c gowns and wearing them. This dress was altered again in the Edwardian period, probably for fancy dress, and I bought it with a dreadfully altered bodice, without sleeves, and lots of fragments.  The piece here had the original 18th c fly fringing removed, probably in the Edwardian period, and then re sewn using thickish twisted floss silks. Originally there would have been fringing to the scalloped bottom of the piece, but probably not to the top part.  This would now look good framed.
