Greek Island Bedhanging
Late 18th/early 19th c

from the island of Kos in the Dodacanese


Cataloguing

of trapezoidal shape, the centre with a pair of birds sitting above an opening with very small birds flanking large leaves repeated down each side, similar leaves above, the sides with foliate diamonds and stylised flowerheads, in soft vermillion and deep seagreen with some ivory, silks on a natural hand woven linen ground, 3 ft 4 in at top width to 5ft 9 in widfest bottom x  7 ft 4 in high; 1.02 to 1.75 cm widest x 2.24 cm high.


Condition

There is a blackish mark to the lower left hand side. The centre panel has areas where the silks have worn away. One of aqua silk floral diamonds to the right hand side has some of the silk thread worn away . The colours are fresh and very attractive vegetable dyes. The centre panel at lower part also has some of the silks worn away. Photos available. One long edge has some areas of slight wear. I can send you photos of each part.
