May Morris embroidery
c 1885

I would imagine this was for a book cover because of the small size.

Cataloguing

embroidered with small poppies and a diagonal spray of leaves with fruits, in shades of blue/green, sage green, apricot and with rust outlining, on a cream ground, a narrow border, in thick floss silks, mounted on a natural linen cotton over a wooden stretcher, 12 x 9 1/4 in; 30 x 24 cm.

Condition

Very good. I would say unfaded colours, all typical of Morris & Company embroideries at this period.

Comments

Poppies are also used for panels for a four fold screen in Linda Parry's William Morris Textiles, p 34 (2013 edition)
