Velvet Gentleman's Suit
1760's

Suits like this are rather rare, despite the missing waistcoat.


Cataloguing

of red coloured vertically narrow striped cut and uncut velvet, a minute repeat pattern alternating with a plain stripe, a small high collar, 3/4 in; 2 cm high, hook and eye to collar front, curving front with ten large covered buttons and buttonholes (five false), deep shaped pockets above three large buttons, the curving sleeves with cuffs , 4 1/2 in; 12 cm, decorated with three large buttons, the back skirts with central slit, flanked by pleated skirts, with further slits, caught by buttons, lined with ivory twill weave silk lining,the sleeves iwth cotton, back 39 in;1 m; chest approx 37 in; 95 cm.



the breeches with fall front held by two buttons, with front side pockets, each secured on the outer edge with a button and buttonhole, five buttonholes and a band fastening, the roomy backside, the deep waistband caught at the back with a tab and three prong steel buckle,


Condition

Jacket: Uevenly faded. The true colur can be seen under the pocket flaps. No stains, holes or damage. Under one arm part of the seam has become undone and someone has stitched it back . This could be improved by a good needlewoman. The lining has some damage.



Breeches: The band fastening would have used a small buckle to secure it. The back buckle is rusty. These are fairly unfaded. A slight yellowish mark to the lower left front leg. The back waistband area has slight fading.
