Large Straw Hat
18th c
A zonnehoed or sunhat from Friesland. The coarse plaited straw would have been covered by a cotton chintz, so that only the finer straw could be seen.
Cataloguing
The huge brim plaited with a coarse straw, a finer plaited straw crown and inner brim, of oval shape with flattened back brim, the underside with radiating spine of coarser plaited straw.
27 in/70 cm wide x 21 in/53 cm deep.
Condition
In remarkable condition considering the size and difficulties of storage. You should be able to see from the photos that on the back brim below the crown there is some damage, and you can see an exposed metal wire and some thread repairs holding the straw together. Also observe the nice detail where the finer plaited straw rises up on the back of the crown.Do ask for more photos.
