Chinese Export Cut Velvet
1860-80s
It is unusual to find sumptous and rich silk velvet furnishing fabric, particularly an unused length. The shot silk colours of bottle green and magenta pink are stunning. It is difficult to photograph. The pink is much more restrained than most of the photos. I would say the colouring would fit well in with a late Victorian interior.
A mid-19th century silk velveteen from China made for the export market. This type of cloth is called zh?ngróng and was woven in the city of Zhangzhou, Fujian Province. The design indicates that it was woven for the Western market (either America or Europe)*
