Striped Evening Shawl
1860s

This shimmering shawl in the newly fashionable aniline purple dye, would have been worn by a middle class women for summer days and evening wear. The shawl would have been woven in wool with a twill weave silk stripe, then the purple/white stripes and pine cones hand blocked.


Cataloguing

The large central field striped with alternating bands of purple and white with a repeat small pines motif, with a feint twill weave trellis formed from a silk stripe, surrounded by a more densely striped border of upright pines between smaller lines of pines, the pines in soft orange, hand block printed in wool and silk, silk fringing, 11 ft x  5ft 7 in; 3.4 x 1.70 m


Condition

Good. There are a few small fingernail size holes near the edge and a few rust coloured marks. The price reflects the conditon.
