Late 18th c.

Wonderful fabric imitating a woven silk. Originally probably a gown. The fabric so loved that it was made into a waistcoat.

Description

The fabric: The aubergine cotton ground hand block printed with a almost circular lace design with roses and other flowers to the bottom of the circle, each circle supported by swags of leaves and flowers, using madder, mid blue, probably indigo, buff and natural colours.

The waistcoat: Double breasted with fabric covered buttons, ten to the left hand side, ten buttonholes and nine to the right hand side, round neck, long front and shorter back, a inked stamp on the coarse linen lining.

Length front 26 1/2 in; 68 cm

Length back 17 in; 44 cm

Pattern repeat 11 in; 28 cm.

Condition

The back has a very small tear to the centre seam which is hardly noticeable and could easily be sorted. both underarm have old patches. The buttonholes are crudely hand worked. 

Comments

The piece below with a similar design is held in the Zurich part of the National museum. Museum Prangins being one of four museums that make the National Swiss museum. see attached website
